The figures still indicate the high rate of violence against women in Egypt due to the persistence of various harmful practices, such as circumcision, early marriage, forced marriage, and other customs and traditions, while 42.5% of women were subjected to psychological violence , 35.1% were exposed to physical violence and 14.5% subjected to sexual violence.

Studies conducted by the Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) 2017 indicated that the rate of violence against women is increasing in the countryside more than in the city. Caritas – Egypt, Assiut office cooperated with CARE International in dealing with gender issues and adopted “Take a step” initiative to gender awareness raising of 120 young and old men from the literacy classes and the care homes in Assiut Governorate, within 4 locations in Assiut Governorate.

The initiative was run by a young man and  a young woman who emphasized that convincing the target group about ideas concerning women’s rights in civil society was one of the most important difficulties they faced during the implementation of the initiative which was aiming at elimination of Violence Against Women, and held from 25 November 2018 to 12 April 2019

The initiative addressed several topics about self-image, power, and authority, the concept of masculinity and femininity, anger management, self-worth, and other gender issues.
